Our NEU number from the 29th of January already explored the developments of the threat represented by Russia’s militarism to regional stability and in particular to Ukraine’s sovereignty. What in January we envisaged as a friction between two States has now become a full-scale military operation to the detriment of Ukraine independence. In this context, NEU will offer detailed insights into each and every aspect arising from this conflict to understand why this is a pivotal moment for the EU, the democratic principles it represents and ultimately for all of us European citizens.

Ukrainians fleeing and the fear of a new European's refugee crisis

Following the Russian invasion, more than 1,5 million people fled Ukraine to Poland and other surrounding countries, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). Kilometers of columns have been erected in certain areas, while authorities in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova are receiving Ukrainians and offer them with shelter, food, and legal assistance. According to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, most refugees stop in Poland or Moldova.

The Russian aggression against Ukraine has reflected on the international arena on many different levels, triggering a severe crisis both at a humanitarian and energy level. In just two weeks, the conflict has rapidly escalated, and so far, the high-level talks of the international leaders and relevant ministers have not yet produced any ceasefire agreement.

War in Ukraine: the acceleration of the EU enlargement could be just apparent

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine unleashed the requests by almost every Country with a pro-European government to accelerate its EU and NATO integration, as an instrument to prevent the threat posed by Moscow’s ambitions. Apart from Ukraine, even Moldova, Georgia, Kosovo, Bosnia Herzegovina demanded an acceleration of their integration process following the war exploded in Europe.

Conflict in Ukraine: the economic consequences for the European Union

Russian military attacks on Ukraine have been going on for three weeks. Such crisis is affecting the economy of all parties involved in the armed conflict, including the European Union as Ukraine's first neighbor. Inflation in the European Union is rising, as well as energy and raw material prices; it will be difficult to avoid a decline in production and consumption, which is why stagflation is a threat – according to several agencies, economic growth is zero when inflation is present.
