The new CCBE Presidency has taken office

| | James MacGuill is the new President of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE). |

| | Following his election by the CCBE Plenary Session on 10 December 2021, James MacGuill (Ireland) is leading the CCBE since 1 January 2022. James MacGuill is a practising solicitor in Ireland and Managing Partner at MacGuill and Company, a practice of five solicitors. He was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 1986 and was appointed a Notary Public in 1996. He has been in private practice ever since as a litigator with an emphasis on public law, especially criminal law and human rights. In 2020 he was one of the first Irish Solicitors to be granted the title Senior Counsel by the Irish Government. He has been actively involved in the Law Society of Ireland, has chaired many of its committees and served as President of the Law Society in 2007-2008. He joined the CCBE in 2008 and was Head of the Irish Delegation to the CCBE twice between 2012 and 2018. He also chaired the CCBE Criminal Law Committee from 2013 during 6 years before joining the CCBE Presidency in 2019. His presidency will be supported by Panagiotis Perakis (Greece) as 1st Vice-President, Pierre-Dominique Schupp (Switzerland) as 2nd Vice-President, and Thierry Wickers (France) as 3rd Vice-President.

| | À la suite de son élection par la session plénière du CCBE le 10 décembre 2021, James MacGuill (Irlande) est à la tête du CCBE depuis le 1er janvier 2022. James MacGuill est un avocat irlandais, associé principal de MacGuill and Company, un cabinet de cinq avocats. Il a obtenu le titre de solicitor en 1986 et a été nommé notaire en 1996. Depuis lors, il exerce dans un cabinet privé en tant qu'avocat plaidant, plus particulièrement dans le domaine du droit public, notamment du droit pénal et des droits humains. En 2020, il a été l'un des premiers solicitors irlandais à se voir accorder le titre de Senior Counsel par le gouvernement irlandais. Il a été actif auprès de la Law Society of Ireland, a présidé plusieurs de ses comités et a été président de la Law Society en 2007-2008. Il a rejoint en 2008 le CCBE où il a été chef de la délégation irlandaise à deux reprises entre 2012 et 2018. Il a également présidé le comité droit pénal du CCBE à partir de 2013 pendant six ans avant de rejoindre la présidence du CCBE en 2019. Sa présidence sera soutenue par Panagiotis Perakis (Grèce) au poste de premier vice-président, Pierre-Dominique Schupp (Suisse) au poste de deuxième vice-président et Thierry Wickers (France) au poste de troisième vice-président. |
