Invitation The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) are organising a hybrid conference, bringing together EU institutions, think-tanks, academics and other distinguished experts to discuss the effects of the European Green Deal on the standing of the EU in the world. In its endeavour to decarbonise the economy, the EGD aims to bring about a thorough transformation, making an intensified use of green energy sources, concluding new-generation trade agreements, implementing major shifts in the transport sector, and creating new jobs. Moreover, the EGD is a huge opportunity for economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, and for making the EU stronger and more resistant and resilient to future challenges. All this will have an impact on the EU's relations with the rest of the world: moving away from fossil fuels means a change in its relationship with energy-producing countries, while the use of new materials and the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism are expected to have consequences on both production and trade. The conference will: - discuss the current efforts to combat climate change and what can be done in the future
- analyse the impact of the green energy and the shift towards open strategic autonomy
- examine how the EGD will keep the promise of leaving no one behind
- reflect on the ways to ensure financing for the green transition.
These questions are of crucial importance for European civil society, as citizens are looking at the EGD with a mixture of hope for recovery and concerns about the new economic, social and environmental framework in which they will have to live. It is therefore very important to involve all actors in the process, as well as to make sure that no one and no place are left behind in our path towards a more sustainable future.
