Highlights - Public Hearing on collective security in the GULF - 27 May 2021 - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

AFET Hearing

On 27 May 2021, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold an online hearing "Collective security in the GULF". The recent tensions in the Middle East, as well as frequent attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia or series of oil tankers detentions in the Strait of Hormuz, have contributed to a worsening of security situation in the region.

While de-escalation is key, the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council have significant influence on the stability of the region, where 20% of the global oil supply flows transit. The hearing will aim at evaluating the security situation in the Gulf region while analysing the possibility of setting up a regional security mechanism.

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

Following these decisions, the next meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) will take place on 16 and


Highlights - Together towards a European Education Area - Committee on Culture and Education

On Monday 31 May (14.00-18.30), CULT will hold an exchange of views with national and regional parliaments entitled "Together towards a European Education Area". Speakers and participants include representatives of the German, Portuguese and Slovenian national parliaments and several regional parliaments of the three Member States forming the current Council Presidency trio.

The event capitalises on the momentum created by recent political efforts at EU level to achieve a European Education Area (EEA) and builds on CULT's ongoing work on an own-initiative report. Through keynote speeches and two panel discussions, it aims

Highlights - Economic Dialogue with the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus - Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs

On 3 June from 9:00 to 10:00, the ECON Committee will hold an economic dialogue with Constantinos Petrides, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus. The focus of the exchange of views will be the progress made by Cyprus under the post-programme surveillance. This economic dialogue is the first in a series of exchanges of views being planned with a number of Member States.

The economic dialogue will take place on the basis of Article 14(3) of Regulation (EU) No 472/2013 on the strengthening of economic and budgetary surveillance of Member States in the euro area experiencing or threatened with serious difficulties with respect to their financial stability.

On 3 June, the EMPL Committee will hold a Structured Dialogue with European Commission Executive Vice-President Dombrovskis and Commissioner Schmit. Members will consider the amendments to the draft report ‘adequate minimum wages in the European Union’ and will discuss a question for oral answer and draft motion for a resolution on the introduction of a European Social Security Number.

EMPL Members will also exchange views with the Executive Director-nominee of EU-OSHA and will hear presentations on the impact of teleworking and digital work on workers and society and on the European Works Councils. On 7 June, the EMPL Committee will adopt the draft recommendation for second reading on the European Social Fund+ (ESF+).

Stop violence against women
On Tuesday 25 May 2021 the FEMM and LIBE Committees considered the draft report with recommendations to the Commission on identifying gender-based violence as a new area of crime listed in Article 83(1) TFEU.

This legislative initiative requests the Commission to propose a Council decision to consider gender-based violence as an area of crime that meets the criteria established under Article 83(1) TFEU.

During this meeting, LIBE and FEMM committees also held an exchange of views with several experts in the field of gender-based violence and EU Law. The event fed into the abovementioned legislative initiative.
