The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 Post forecasts Brazil's 2019/20 marketing year (MY) cotton area to reach 1.65 million hectares (ha), an increase of about 2 percent on the current season's estimated area of 1.62 million ha. Post forecasts 2019/20 harvest at 12.67 million bales (2.76 million metric tons). Next season's expansion rates for cotton planted area and production are subdued as compared to explosive growth seen in Brazil's cotton sector in recent past. This forecast is based on the expectation of lower global prices and higher production costs. Exports are forecast to top 8.5 million bales, up from 6 million bales in the 2018/19 season. Domestic consumption is forecast at 3.6 million bales, which is a 3 percent increase compared to the current MY, and is forecast based a moderate economic growth outlook for 2020. Sweden: The 2019 Nordic Organic Food Fair in Sweden FAS/The Hague visited the Nordic Organic Food Fair in Malmö, Sweden on November 14, 2019. This is a regional (Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark) trade show focusing on organics and vegan products. Although the show was relatively small, exhibitors informed FAS/The Hague that they were relatively pleased with quality of buyers it attracted (i.e., a mix of smaller retail buyers, food processors and E-commerce traders). Although there were ten country pavilions, 90 percent of the exhibitors were based in Europe. There were five exhibitors from the United States. In addition, several seminars were organized on the margins of the show. NOTE: This show is not open to the public. Uzbekistan: Cotton and Products Update MY 2019/20 Uzbek cotton planted area is estimated at 1.03 million hectares and production at 3.17 million bales (480 pounds bales), which is approximately 690,000 MT. The government of Uzbekistan continued to lower the cotton planting area of seed cotton to increase vegetable and fruit production in the areas where seed cotton yields are low. Additionally, adverse growing conditions for cotton affected field yields this past summer. MY 2019/20 domestic consumption is estimated at 3.07 million bales (670,000 MT). Uzbekistan cotton exports were 688,000 bales (150,000 MT) during MY 2018/19. The Uzbek government has also taken a decision to stop cotton exports starting from CY 2020.
