Map of the current status of states/territories with Real ID Act compliance

What Is the Real ID Act and Why Should I Care?

You may have noticed signs at airport security checkpoints to warn travelers about upcoming ID requirement changes. The Real ID Act was passed to set new security standards for accessing federal facilities and boarding airplanes. Many states have to change their driver’s licenses to comply. The new cards will have a built-in technology, making them more difficult to forge or copy. Enforcement begins October 1, 2020. After that, if you don’t have a compliant license, you’ll need to use an alternative acceptable form of ID, like a passport. Find out if the license you have now is Real ID compliant or if you’ll need to get a new license soon.
