U.S. Department of Labor announces departure of Women’s Bureau Director Patricia G. Greene

Women's Bureau Director Patricia Greene returned to the private sector effective April 26, 2019. "For a year and a half as Director of the Women's Bureau, Dr. Patti Greene has led the Women's Bureau mission to support America's working women, and ensure that they have access to good, family-sustaining jobs," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. "We are grateful for her service, and wish her success in her future endeavors." President Donald J. Trump appointed Greene as Director of the Women's Bureau on October 31, 2017.

Strong job growth continues for women

In March 2019, the unemployment rate for adult women continued to be at historic lows—3.3%. "The unemployment rate held steady at 3.8%, marking the thirteenth straight month the unemployment rate was at or below 4.0%. In particular, the 3.3% unemployment rate for adult women matched the low since 1953," said Secretary Acosta. "With healthy job growth, rising wages, and low unemployment, we continue to work to increase labor force participation to fill high levels of open jobs."

On March 29, the Women’s Bureau brought Women’s History Month to a close with a celebration that featured U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta and three inspiring women: Solicitor of Labor Kate O’Scannlain, Director of the Women’s Bureau Patricia Greene, and Treasurer of the United States Jovita Carranza. O'Scannlain's keynote focused on new opportunities for women, while Carranza discussed "Aspirations, Behaviors and Confidence" as a roadmap for women’s success in a fireside chat with Greene. "I learned early on that wisdom was not learning through mistakes or experiences, but actually learning through other peoples’ missteps," said Carranza.

Director Greene spoke at a panel during the 2019 International Women's Day Forum co-hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Department of State. In her remarks, Dr. Greene emphasized the promise of technological innovation and artificial intelligence for enhancing women's performance in the labor force. She also addressed the need to support more women in choosing less common career paths, such as those in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). U.S. Department of Labor receives eMentor's 2018 Outstanding Commitment to Mentoring Award

On April 24, Paris Mack, Administrative Officer at the Women's Bureau, accepted eMentor's 2018 Outstanding Commitment to Mentoring Award on behalf of the U.S. Department of Labor. The awards ceremony took place at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial as part of the AcademyWomen's Officer Women Leadership Symposium. eMentor is an online mentoring program comprising a database of potential mentors and serves to connect them with current service members and those transitioning out of the military, as well as their spouses.

Director Greene speaks at Road to GES Heartland USA

On March 19, Women's Bureau Director Patricia Greene participated in the Road to GES Heartland USA, which brought together hundreds of entrepreneurs, investors, and public and private sector leaders from across the Heartland in preparation for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2019 to be hosted by the State Department in June 2019. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered the keynote address. Greene's remarks highlighted the work that the Women's Bureau does to support women entrepreneurs across the nation in strengthening and growing their businesses.

On March 19 the White House released the 2019 Economic Report of the President together with the Annual Report of the Council of Economic Advisers. Chapter 3, titled “Expanding Labor Force Opportunities for Every American,” includes a section on the Administration's policies aimed at reducing the costs of child care and discusses the potential benefits of reducing occupational licensing, among other measures, to catalyze economic growth and encourage greater engagement in the labor market.
