Progress of Medical Library at Evαngelismos Hospital by AHEPA Chapter HJ-1, Athens.
During the AHEPA Family Leadership Excursion to Athens, Supreme President George E. Loucas and the delegation received a tour of the Medical Library at Evangelismos Hospital to see the progress made in its construction. Project Co-Chairman and Past Canadian President Xenophon Scoufaras provided the tour on May 10. AHEPA Chapter HJ-1, Athens, raised the funds to establish the library. We were so excited with the library's progress that we want to share a video!  watch and share video
 
AP: Milwaukee Greeks rally behind Bucks' Antetokounmpo
A May 13 Associated Press story about NBA Star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Greek American community of Milwaukee features interviews with AHEPA Milwaukee Chapter 43 President Tim Stasinoulias and the chapter's athletic director, Steve Itsines. Antetokounmpo is a two-time recipient of the prestigious AHEPA-Harry Agganis Award.  watch here

AHEPA Honoree, Former Nicosia Mayor Zampelas Passes Away
AHEPA mourns the passing of Brother Michael Zampelas, who served as mayor of Nicosia from 2002 to 2006. Initiated into the Order in 2011, Brother Zampelas founded AHEPA Chapter CY-5, Kaimakli, Cyprus. In 2016, he received the AHEPA Aristotle Award for his 30 years of prominence in the accounting and management consulting profession. Brother Zampelas was the founder and CEO of Coopers & Lybrand in Cyprus and Athens, Greece (merging later with Price Waterhouse to eventually become PwC). Brother Zampelas was 82.  read more
May is Older Americans Month
 
Did You Know? AHEPA, through the AHEPA National Housing Corp., is a leading provider of affordable housing for the elderly in the United States through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Section 202 Program for the Elderly. AHEPA's Housing Program has developed 95 affordable elderly housing communities, totaling nearly 5,000 residential units, spanning 21 states. Some stats to consider during Older Americans Month as provided by the Administration for Community Living:
  • The population age 65 and over increased from 37.2 million in 2006 to 49.2 million in 2016 (a 33% increase) and is projected to almost double to 98 million in 2060. 
  • The age 85 and over population is projected to more than double from 6.4 million in 2016 to 14.6 million in 2040 (a 129% increase).
  • About one in every seven, or 15.2%, of the population is an older American.
  • Learn more about how you can observe Older Americans Month.
Also, HUD's latest Worst Case Housing Needs report found the number of older adult households with worst case needs increased by 382,000 households in 2013-2015, or 66% of the number of new cases of 582,000, reaching at total of 1.9 million.

Antetokounmpo funds basketball court in fire-ravaged Greece

Greek NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo has agreed to fund the construction of an indoor basketball court in a fire-ravaged area outside Athens where at least 100 people were killed last year.  read more

When the Eastern Conference final resumes on Sunday at Scotiabank Arena, Voula McLaughlin and her two kids, age 12 and 7, will be watching intently. McLaughlin is the daughter of an orphaned Greek immigrant and lives in a Raptors household, having been through the ups and downs of the past five seasons with the team - her rooting interests are clear. But she will also be brimming with joy to see Giannis Antetokounmpo continue his push to be the best player in the world.  read more

Cyprus to conduct eight drillings in EEZ over next two years

Cyprus will proceed with eight drillings for hydrocarbons in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) over the next 24 months, the country's Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis announced on Tuesday.   read more

North Macedonia says fighter jets from neighboring Greece have carried out NATO-linked test overflights of its territory as part of the country's process of joining the alliance.  read more

When Turkey Destroyed Its Christians

Between 1894 and 1924, the number of Christians in Asia Minor fell from some 3-4 million to just tens of thousands-from 20% of the area's population to under 2%. Turkey has long attributed this decline to wars and the general chaos of the period, which claimed many Muslim lives as well. But the descendants of Turkey's Christians, many of them dispersed around the world since the 1920s, maintain that the Turks murdered about half of their forebears and expelled the rest.  read more

Why It's Relevant Almost 80 Years Later
The Pappas Post (May 21)

Life Magazine carried the illustration back in June 1941, depicting an old Cretan villager "welcoming" a Nazi paratrooper to his island with his pitchfork. The illustration was part of a multi-page report about the invasion of Crete- before the era of iPhones and instantaneous transfer of photography. It was an artist's depiction of the events that transpired. read more
