Ahepans Visit Wildfires Area; Meet with U.S. Ambassador, Firefighters, and Local Government
An AHEPA delegation led by Supreme President George E. Loucas visited eastern Attica, Greece, to survey the devastation in Mati and Rafina from July's wildfires, and to meet with local officials and residents, September 6, 2018.  Prior to the visit to Attica, they met with U.S. Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt and representatives of the Hellenic Fire Brigade, September 5, 2018.  read entire news release

Although Congress is heading into the homestretch of the 115th Congress, there is still plenty of time to increase the membership of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues. AHEPA asks for your help. The Hellenic Caucus has been an active, bipartisan group in Congress since its founding in 1995.  It is co-chaired by U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and its co-founder, Carolyn Maloney (D-NY).

Bailout Over, Greece Returning to Stormy Markets
Wall Street Journal (Sept. 9)
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras unveiled his post-bailout economic policy over the weekend, promising some relief from austerity measures while sticking to budget discipline. His difficulty is that Greece has weaned itself from bailout loans just as bond markets are becoming more volatile again after years of calm.  read more (subscription required)

Creditors warn Greece on debt relief as inspectors return

Greece's lead creditor warned the country on Monday not to stray from reforms agreed upon before the end of its international bailout, as European monitors arrived to check the nation's finances.  read more
 
2 Turkish service members arrested at Greek border released

Two Turkish soldiers were released from Greek custody after they were arrested Sunday for entering Greece illegally.  Both armies have released statements which differ slightly in the details.The Turkish army statement, released first, said the soldiers were trailing migrants to keep them from crossing into neighboring Greece, but accidentally passed the border themselves.  read more 
  
Flurry of US activity at Thessaloniki Fair

The support of the American business community for Greece is being underscored by the plethora of deals revealed in the context of the ongoing 83rd Thessaloniki International Fair, where the United States is the country of honor.  As US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross stressed during the energy conference organized by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) on Friday just hours before the fair's opening, the presence of major American companies at the TIF is a sign of trust in the future of Greece's economy and of America's desire to be a part of it. read more

Constantinople's Historic Orphanage, Used to Host Greek Children, Awaits Salvation
The National Herald (Sept. 10)

 
Each morning, Erol Baytas checks for further damage on the imposing but derelict timber building on an island off Istanbul that for decades housed orphans from the minority Greek community.  The scene on the hilltop on the island of Buyukada, the largest of the nine Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara, looks more like the shattered remains of a horror movie set than the majestic hotel and casino complex that it was originally intended to be.   read more
